Getting Started

Everything you need to know about modular video synthesis

What is Modular Video?

Modular video synthesis is the practice of creating and manipulating video signals using interconnected hardware modules. Inspired by modular audio synthesis, these systems allow you to generate, process, and transform video in real-time using patch cables and control voltages.

LZX Industries designs Eurorack-format modules specifically for video synthesis, enabling artists and performers to create stunning visual compositions.

Building Your First System

To get started with modular video, you will need a few essential components:

  1. A Eurorack case and power supply — Standard Eurorack cases work with LZX modules.
  2. A video encoder/output module — Converts your modular signals to a standard video format.
  3. Signal generators — Modules that create patterns, shapes, and colors.
  4. Patch cables — Standard 3.5mm Eurorack patch cables for connecting modules.
  5. A display — Any monitor or projector with composite or HDMI input.

Essential Modules

While every system is different, here are some categories of modules to consider:

  • Video Input/Output — Encode and decode video signals for display and capture.
  • Pattern Generators — Create geometric shapes, ramps, and oscillating patterns.
  • Color Processing — Mix, key, and transform color channels.
  • Effects Processing — Add feedback, distortion, and other effects.
